
Project Introduction
Severe flooding in Texas during the summer of 2025 caused significant scour, undermining, and loss of ground at a new Union Pacific Railroad bridge under construction near Houston. Several drilled shafts had already been drilled and cased, but concrete placement had not yet occurred when the flooding affected the site.
The loss and disturbance of soil surrounding the shaft casings created concern that the completed foundations would not provide the lateral resistance required by the original design. The condition required an immediate engineered response because the foundations had to be ready before a scheduled railroad curfew for replacement of the bridge’s main span.
REN worked closely with Union Pacific Railroad and its engineering team to evaluate the affected foundations and develop a targeted compaction-grouting program. The repair was designed to replace lost ground, densify disturbed soils, and reestablish the surrounding ground support required for the drilled shafts to achieve their as-designed lateral capacity.
