Project Introduction

During construction of an INDOT project near Princeton, Indiana, a drilled shaft required additional post-installation evaluation. REN worked closely with the general contractor, drilling subcontractor, and INDOT to develop and implement an inspection program that would provide direct information about the condition and continuity of the completed shaft.

REN performed inspection coring through the drilled shaft, advancing the core holes to the bottom of the foundation. The full-depth coring allowed the project team to evaluate the shaft and identify the locations requiring remedial treatment.

Following the inspection, REN used the core holes to perform a targeted pressure-grouting repair. Neat cement grout was injected under pressure to address the conditions identified during the investigation and improve the integrity and continuity of the drilled shaft.

Key Highlights

Coordinated the inspection and repair program with INDOT, the general contractor, and the drilling subcontractor

Performed post-installation inspection coring through the constructed drilled shaft

Advanced core holes to the bottom of the shaft to provide full-depth evaluation

Used the inspection results to guide the required remedial work

Developed and implemented a targeted pressure-grouting repair program

Injected neat cement grout under pressure through the completed core holes

Combined investigation and repair activities into an efficient, coordinated field program

Conclusion

By combining full-depth inspection coring with targeted pressure grouting, REN provided the project team with a direct means of evaluating the drilled shaft and completing the required repair. Close coordination among REN, INDOT, the general contractor, and the drilling subcontractor allowed the investigation and remedial work to be completed efficiently while maintaining the foundation’s intended performance.
